Dreamlike atmospheres, surreal veins, figurative themes ranging from classical to Western mythology, evoke a fantastic world that goes beyond history and reality.
From earth to water, among fruits, flowers and insects: all these elements recur in the fabrics and glass and ceramic works in this section. Noteworthy, among the many examples, is the ‘Vase with poetic verse and forest detail’ (1900, Gallè), from the Verreries Parlantes series, which bears a verse from Victor Hugo's La Notte at the base: ‘Les arbres se parlent tout bas’ (The trees speak softly to each other).
Thanks to the value of the materials used, the high level of manufacturing, and the elegance of the shape, even everyday objects become true luxury items.
The artistic vase is an object with great appeal, present in every type of furniture and often chosen as a gift for the unanimous appreciation it enjoys.
Initially born in Belgium, thanks to the architect Victor Horta, Art Nouveau soon spread throughout Europe, quickly becoming the style of the new rising bourgeoisie. In Italy, it initially took the name «Floreale» (Floral), which is how the new and bizarre style launched by fabrics and objects designed for the LIBERTY & CO. LTD stores was defined. The Liberty style represented the first way in which industrial society tried to give itself an aesthetic, seeking inspiration in nature and plant forms, to create a new style, totally original compared to those then in vogue. The most important centers of the "Art Nouveau style of the '900" were Turin, Palermo, Florence, Lucca, Viareggio, Milan (casa Galimberti, Porta Venezia), Rome, Emilia Romagna.
The movement was definitively established in our country after the Turin Exhibition in 1902. The promoters of the new style, all belonging to the circle of artists from Turin, were the sculptor Leonardo Bistolfi, the architect Raimondo D'Aronco and the writer Enrico Thovez. A significant contribution to the application of the Art Nouveau style to the applied arts comes from France, where prominent figures are Emile Gallè and Renè Lalique, who dedicate themselves above all to a refined production intended for a very wealthy clientele.
