Walnut wood, cm. 69 x 39 x 14 The piece in question is a pair of walnut wood niches dating back to the mid-19th century, with two gilded figures of praying archangels sculpted in bas-relief that emerge three-dimensionally from a blue background, set inside a frame with two gilded, fluted columns as a profile. The corbel base with a reserve is sculpted with an olive branch sprig and features two richly inlaid gilded friezes. Originally, the pair of niches surely had a decorative function, probably accompanying a Madonna and Child within a triptych, alluding consequently to the Annunciation. The use of intense blue in the background helps to highlight the figures of the gilded archangels, meticulously sculpted in every single detail: the drapery, perfectly rendered in its consistency, and the large wings are particularly refined and valuable. From a stylistic point of view, the piece fits into the neo-Renaissance stylistic current, which developed between 1820 and 1890, and is characterized by a revival of typically Renaissance forms: in particular, there is a specialization in finishes and carved ornaments, widely enhanced in the pair of niches. Considered one of the most eclectic periods of the 19th century, the Neo-Renaissance saw frequent use of walnut wood, particularly appreciated for its sturdiness and resistance.
