PAINTED AND MONOGRAMMED WEDDING CHEST DATED 1852 (New Entry)  Translated
Description:
Traditional wedding chest in lacquered and painted softwood with floral motifs. Dated 1852 and monogrammed G.L.D.. These particular pieces of furniture were donated to the young lady who was getting married to store her wedding trousseau. In the past, for the female daughter, the trousseau began to be composed with the choice and embroidery of fabrics since she was a child. This happened in all families, regardless of social extraction and this last aspect only influenced the number of pieces that made up the trousseau and the wealth of fabrics. There were 12 pieces or multiples of 12, kept in several chests or wooden chests, preferably worked or painted for the occasion. A trousseau was composed of a part for the house and a personal one. The basic trousseau for the home generally consisted of bed linen with 24 double sheets of pure hand-embroidered linen, 24 simple ones, 36 pairs of pillowcases plus 12 Holland canvas towels plus 6 for guests, tablecloths with 12 very fine tablecloths, linen fabrics, organza, hemp and cotton plus 6 for every day and so on. The personal part, on the other hand, contemplated underwear, silk nightgowns, canvas shirts, cloaks, handkerchiefs with a blaze of lace and embroidery. In addition, of course, to the bride's dresses!
