Important large oil on canvas painting, depicting the Virgin with Child and three festive Cherubs intent on adoring Him. The Mother with her hands on her chest, magnificently depicted, and the Child with wide, bright eyes, meet gazes vertically in a scene of serene tenderness.
The work is evidently of a high level, and the particularly successful compositional structure evokes very pleasant sensations.
In fact, the clear message of a happy and joyful Motherhood, free from references to omens of suffering, confirms that the painting was intended to adorn the wall of a private residence.
The particular finesse and the warm and luminous colors lead to its placement in the Genoese production of the second half of the 17th century and more precisely in the workshop of the great master Domenico Piola (Genoa 1627-1703).
Attribution further confirmed by the experts at Christie's auction house in London.
The work is of exquisite workmanship and expresses with extreme elegance the pictorial characteristics of the Genoese Baroque, among the most important artistic movements of the Italian pictorial panorama of the 17th century.
Piola was an excellent interpreter of it together with his friend and master Valerio Castello.
