English navy telescope, early 1800s.
The telescope is signed "John Gray n.4 East Smithfield London", "Improved Day or Night".
"Day or night" telescopes were commonly used on ships and could be used in the dark because they had relatively large lenses to collect the maximum amount of light in low visibility conditions.
The telescope consists of a brass and mahogany wood tube and is extendable.
The telescope measures 51 cm when closed and 90 cm when extended, diameter 6.5 cm.
The lenses are original and in good condition.
