This 18th-century painting (oil on cardboard) fits into the context of the Grand Tour, which young European nobles undertook in the 18th century, with Italy as an essential destination. The discovery of Pompeii and Herculaneum had revived the taste for the classics at that time. In the painting, presumably a young man is seen during his Grand Tour, taking notes on the Roman architectural ruins he sees. In the painting, one can notice an unrealistic (invented) perspective game of grottoes, from which a large Roman aqueduct emerges.
