Axel Nyström, 1908, Mother Svea  Translated
Description:
Axel Nyström, 1908 Mother Svea Marble, 43.5 cm Signed on the base The biscuit sculpture analyzed represents the figure of Mother Svea (in Swedish Moder Svea), a national personification of Sweden. Svea is a female proper name that derives from an ancient plural genitive meaning "of the Svear," a Germanic people who occupied Scandinavia. It is also used in the corononym Svea rike, which means "Kingdom of the Svear," from which Sverige, the Swedish name for Sweden, derives. Commonly depicted as a powerful warrior, a valkyrie, or skjaldmö, she is often armed with a shield and has a lion beside her. The creation of her popular image is attributed to the Swedish writer Anders Leijonstedt, who first introduced her in his poem Svea Lycksaligheets Triumph in 1672. As a patriotic symbol, she gained popularity with the composition Kunga Skald, written in 1697 by the Swedish poet Gunno Eurelius in honor of King Charles XI of Sweden. In the 19th century, she frequently appeared as a patriotic symbol and was depicted in various coins. The sculpture rests on a rectangular base with beveled corners. At the center is a shield flanked by walnut leaves on the left and laurel leaves on the right.
