The Three Graces

Daughters of the god Zeus and the nymph Eurynome, called Charites by the Greeks, they were the goddesses of joy, charm, and beauty. Their names were Aglaia, ‘she who shines’, Euphrosyne, ‘she who brings joy and gladness’, and Thalia, ‘she who brings flowers’. The Graces presided over banquets, dances, and gatherings of the gods, spreading joy and friendship between gods and mortals. Often the goddesses accompanied Aphrodite and Eros, divinities who presided over Love, and together with the Muses they sang and danced for the gods on Mount Olympus to the sound of the lyre played by Apollo. In some legends, Aglaia was the wife of Hephaestus, the blacksmith of the gods. Like the Muses, they gave artists and poets the ability to create beautiful works of art.
They were usually depicted as young virgins dancing and embracing to form a circle. Famous are the verses of Ugo Foscolo, who composed them to praise the graceful and soft sensuality of the Three Graces sculpted by Antonio Canova:
Perhaps (or so I hope!) artificer of Gods,
you will give new spirit with me to the Graces
which now rise from the marble by your hand.
