Pair of Neoclassical carved and gilded wooden mirrors, Sicily, Late 18th century
Description:
Pair of Neoclassical carved and gilded wooden mirrors, Sicily, Late 18th century Dimensions: H 70 x Max. W 50 x W (frame) 43.5 x D 3 Price: private negotiation Items accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. This delightful pair of mirrors was made in Sicily during the Neoclassical period, towards the end of the 18th century. They consist of a box frame, in carved wood, divided into three sections. The outermost part has a carving with a foliate motif, while the innermost part has a geometric decoration. The central section consists of painted glass inserts, simulating marble. The frame is supported at the bottom by two feet with vegetal volutes, while the crest features a central element, in a typically Neoclassical style, composed of fan-shaped foliate motifs from which two symmetrical foliate volutes depart. The wooden frame of this elegant mirror has a gilt finish over silver leaf. Gilding over silver leaf is a type of gilding performed on silver leaf so that it takes on the appearance and preciousness of gold leaf. “Mecca” is a varnish with an ancient recipe that was jealously guarded in the workshops. It involves the use of sandarac gum and gamboge gum in alcohol, dragon's blood, and other ingredients that, when mixed together, contribute to the different chromatic elements of the “mecca”. The pair of mirrors is characterized by the elegance of the Neoclassical style, with a compositional taste particularly suitable for both antique and modern settings. Their compact size allows them to be easily placed in your living room, entrance or study, where they will return a lot of reflected light both from the mirror and from the preciousness of the wood finish. In good condition.
