17th century
Lion
Marble, 30 x 43 x 25
The object in question is a marble sculpture attributable to the 17th century, characterized by a strong, visceral language, in search of the effect and attention of the observer: a poetics made to shake the viewer, where the focus of everything becomes the movement and dynamism imprinted in the material.
In this case, the subject is a lion with gaping jaws, long considered the "king of animals", and associated with positive virtues and qualities such as strength, pride, majesty, nobility, and courage, but also royalty and wisdom.
The sculptor's mastery is clearly visible the movement and power conferred to the animal, which seems to emerge from the marble itself and come to life. Particularly intriguing, finally, is the interplay between perfectly smooth surfaces and those worked to return every smallest detail with great realism.
