Antique Centerpieces, First Quarter of the 19th Century
Description:
Pair of centerpieces in burnished bronze and Siena yellow marble, Italy, first quarter of the 19th century. Oval marble base with plinth, embellished with shell and bead frets on the lower part and by a pair of festoons composed of leaves, lacustrine reeds and four valves arranged in a rosette, one of which is partly missing. Upper section of the base with a bronze plate simulating marine ripples, from which a full-round sculpture rises depicting a winged, double-tailed mermaid, characterized by a 'crown' of seaweed and raised arms, the latter holding a large segmented-profile shell placed on the top. One of the bronzes that wrap the plinth is partially missing.
