18th century, Louis XVI, Wall Cartaglorie  Translated
Description:
18th century, Louis XVI Wall Cartaglorie (3) Carved and gilded wood, cm 60 x 40 - cm 35 x 36 Mirror, cm 30 x 26 - cm 14 x 13 The three pieces of furniture in question represent splendid examples of Louis XVI cartaglorie carved and gilded, dating back to the 18th century, inside which mirrors have been inserted, making them very refined mirrors. Originally, the cartagloria was a liturgical object placed on the altar characterized by a sumptuous decorated frame, inside which a cartouche was placed that contained the formulas in Latin to be recited during mass, especially during the offertory. With the abandonment of this practice, the cartagloria began to be reinvented to satisfy other purposes, modifying its function: it was thus that often, as in this case, a mirror was inserted in place of the liturgical text, which transformed it into a refined and lavish object of furniture. The objects presented here, to be understood as a group characterized by two smaller lateral cartaglorie and a more imposing central one, are characterized by a remarkable splendor, traceable not only in the use of the golden color, but above all in the highly refined details carved on the surface, which denote great skill and mastery by the craftsman. The frames are then further embellished by the sculptural depiction of plant fronds and flowers, which further contribute to enriching and moving the elongated shape. At the culmination of the frames, a laurel wreath (in Latin laurea insignis) has been created, closed by a central flower, which in Greco-Roman mythology symbolized the wisdom and glory that girded the head of great poets and writers; laurel was also considered a sacred plant in classical culture, associated in particular with the god Apollo, god of the sun, music, poetry, sculpture and painting. Finally, the gold wreath in the shape of a laurel wreath was attributed as an honor of the Republic to the triumphant general and in the imperial era worn by the Roman emperor as a symbol of magnificence and splendor. The eighteenth century was a decidedly dynamic century, which historically marked the transition to the contemporary age, with the end of the domination of the great monarchies and the rise of the bourgeoisie; the style that was imposed in this period, which saw the transition from the rococo to neoclassicism, was extraordinary for art, architecture and high craftsmanship: at the base of the Louis XVI style is the search for harmony and proportion, even if the use of the motifs of classical antiquity does not follow rigid models, but is a source of inspiration for free interpretations.
