LENCI, The Seamstress  Translated
Description:
Slip-cast earthenware decorated with polychrome underglaze enamels depicting The Seamstress. Measurements: H 35 X W 18 X D 15 The figure is seated on a column, holding an apple in her left hand and a black hatbox with a polka dot pattern slung over her right arm. The girl's face has the characteristic doll-like features and a garcon hairstyle, she wears a black beret and a lobster-orange dress, with a simple cut that follows the shape of the body. The girl represents a model of femininity already proposed by Mrs. Scavini in many ceramics created and designed during the 1930s, reflecting the society of the time, which shows young girls in contemporary clothes caught in simple and everyday gestures. This version is exemplary as it is embellished with the addition of a side bow in ceramic; the bow turns into a practical handle to lift part of the hatbox, revealing its function as a container. Under the base it is signed "Lenci Made in Italy Turin" dated 1934 (XII year of the Fascist era). Incised inscription in the paste on the back side of the base "icnel".
