Adolfo Laurenti (1858 – 1944), Bust of a Togatus  Translated
Description:
Adolfo Laurenti (Monte Porzio Catone, April 23, 1858 – Rome, 1944) Bust of a Togatus Terracotta, cm 21 x 18 x 12 Adolfo Laurenti was born on April 23, 1858, in Monte Porzio (since 1872 Monte Porzio Catone). A student of the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca, he taught sculpture at the Art Institute of Urbino. He was repeatedly awarded in international competitions and exhibitions. Adolfo Laurenti was one of the artists who contributed to creating the secular image of the new state born in 1861, participating in important artistic endeavors of his time aimed primarily at the construction of monuments to illustrious figures. His artistic research starts from a classical-inspired realism, for example, in the celebrated bust of a Roman Senator, to then arrive, as in the frieze on the facade of the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome, at features closer to floral and symbolism. Libero Frizzi (1893-1954) and Edgardo Simone (1890-1948) trained in his studio, and Simone collaborated with Laurenti on the creation of works for the International Exhibitions of Rome in 1911. In 1908, he worked on the Vittoriano, the most important artistic construction site in Rome of that period, participating in the competition for the two quadrigas destined for the propylaea. Paolo Bartolini and Carlo Fontana won, but Laurenti was included in the group of artists commissioned to execute the bas-reliefs depicting Fame and Victories for the pronaos. In 1880, he established himself nationally with the award at the Exhibition of Turin, where he presented four works: An Arab, An Arab Woman, An Augur, and above all, the aforementioned Roman Senator, a bust that was highly successful and had the honor of being published on the cover of the Italian Illustration. Following this success, the present terracotta sculpture depicting a Roman togatus can be included: the bald head is crowned with laurel leaves, while the torso is wrapped in the voluminous drapery of a toga. Laurenti makes the line his plastic medium par excellence: his main characteristic is the indefinite contours aimed at highlighting the solidity of the character. The artist always managed to give his figures a true monumentality, despite the simplification of volumes and forms.
