Allegory of Abundance
Plaster, 12 x 13 cm
In classical mythology, the Allegory of Abundance is depicted as a young, rather plump nymph with a brightly colored face, a wreath of flowers and fruit around her head, holding in her arms one of the horns of the goat Amalthea filled with various products of the earth.
The cornucopia, literally "horn of plenty," is a mythological symbol of food and abundance. It is found in the hands of the goddess Fortuna, here depicted together with a putto supporting the weight of a basket of flowers. According to Greek mythology, the horn refers to the one lost by the river Achelous in the struggle with Hercules for Deianira and filled by the Naiads with flowers and fruit, as a symbol of abundance, alluding to the fertility of the valley where the Achelous flowed.
According to another version of the myth, the horn belonged to Amalthea, the goat that welcomed and nourished Zeus in his childhood in Crete. As a thank you, the father of the Gods blessed her horns, conferring magical powers upon them.
In the form of a horn overflowing with fruit and flowers, it is often present in paintings in the arms of the symbolic figure of abundance.
