Rare painting depicting 'Jonah spewed out by the fish'
Description:
Rare painting depicting 'Jonah spewed out by the fish', 17th century.
Jonah (9th century BC – 8th century BC) was an ancient Hebrew prophet, the protagonist of the Old Testament book of the same name. He is one of the twelve minor prophets and is venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church: he is commemorated on September 21. The story tells that the Lord commands Jonah to go and preach in Nineveh. Instead, he escapes on a ship that will suddenly be hit by a storm. Then Jonah will find the courage to confess to his traveling companions that the Lord had caused the storm because he had not obeyed him. At that point, his companions threw him into the sea and he was swallowed by a large fish. From the belly of the fish, where he remains for three days and three nights, Jonah addresses an intense prayer to God, which recalls one of the Psalms. Then, by divine command, the fish vomits Jonah onto the beach.
