Romolo Ubertalli
Son of Celestino Sebastiano Ubertalli Carbonin (1845-1900), lawyer and entrepreneur in the wool sector, and Maddalena Ferrarotti (1848-1920), he was born and lived for the first 11 years with his parents and older sister in a wool mill in the Biella area, along the Venalba stream. In 1882 he moved to Turin with his family, where he attended high school and university: his father directed him towards legal studies, which Ubertalli decided to abandon to dedicate himself to painting. He then attended the Albertina Academy, where he was first a student of Carlo Follini and then of Andrea Tavernier, acquiring skills in the use of pastel (the most used technique in his artistic production), in oil painting and watercolor, specializing in landscape painting en plein air; he also developed skills as a photographer, always in the landscape field, exploiting photographs for the functional aspect of painting. He preferred Alpine landscapes, in particular the Val Vigezzo, of which he made several nocturnal views, and Lake Maggiore. In 1895 he married Ida Re, with whom he had two daughters: Annie and Milena.
His style reflects the characteristics of the Rivara School, of Antonio Fontanesi and Lorenzo Delleani, in the contrast of a production based on the observation of reality but at the same time full of a lyrical and emotional vision, but the imprint of Tavernier is equally evident, especially in the study and modulation of light in order to reproduce particular and suggestive effects, as in Path in the Countryside, in which the rays of the sun filter vividly through the leaves, creating an almost divisionist effect on the ground.
He made his debut at the Italian General Exhibition of 1898 in Turin with Near Turin, Gray Weather and studies of nine mountain landscapes. In 1899, again in Turin, he exhibited Sunset and other studies from life. He exhibited regularly in Turin, Milan, Rome, Biella and Vercelli. In addition to exhibitions, he obtained early recognitions that led him to be considered one of the most talented young Piedmontese artists.
Considered a pastel artist of remarkable talent, he was also a photographer.
Among his works, today preserved in various Italian museums, including the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome and the Civic Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Turin, are: Beginning of Spring, Alpine Freshness, Summer in the Biella Prealps and Twilight. Mountain Chalet by Moonlight is one of his most evocative nocturnes.
