"Penitent Magdalene"
Pompeo Girolamo Batoni (Lucca 1708 - Rome 1787)
Oil on canvas
Antique lacquered and gilded frame
Canvas 48 x 64 cm
Frame 57 x 73 cm
A beautiful and very young Mary Magdalene with particularly sweet and serene features, far from the usual messages of ostentatious sensuality or great suffering.
This extraordinary female figure, who has stimulated the creativity of all the great masters of ancient painting, is depicted by the author in a way that makes her unusually modest, with a very sweet and innocent face. Magdalene does not offer her bare breast and languid gaze to the viewer, but rather covers her chest with her open left hand in a gesture of intimate composure. Her right hand reaches towards the skull, a symbol of the fragility of human life and repentance. Her face is turned downwards towards the crucifix resting on her arm.
The painting is of very high quality and presents the characteristics of Pompeo Batoni's pictorial style, one of the most refined interpreters of the artistic scene of the 18th century in the Capital.
The work is in excellent condition, still in its original frame, and is complete with its original faux marble lacquered frame.
