Pair of important and rare carved bone mirrors, France, Dieppe manufacture, mid-19th century
Description:
Pair of important and rare carved bone mirrors, France, Dieppe manufacture, mid-19th century Dimensions: cm H 84 x W 53 x D 14 Price between 8,500.00/9,500.00 euros Object accompanied by a certificate of authenticity These particular and important mirrors were made by the French manufacture of Dieppe around the mid-19th century. Each oval-shaped mirror is set in a mixtilinear wooden frame richly decorated with bone applications. The material is finely engraved and carved: multiple small leaf-shaped parts are assembled, among which carved elements depicting fantasy marine creatures, winged cherubs, feathers, and male heads whose hair and beard are made up of leafy elements appear. There are also heraldic motifs such as flags, shields, crowns, and the Latin motto "SCOTORUM" is engraved, meaning "of the Scots". "Scoti" referred to the Irish and Scots, descendants of Queen Scota (from which the name Scotland derives). The fine mirrors are therefore distinguished by their striking decorativeness and their great charm. They are curious objects that can be combined with antique and modern furnishings and are suitable for any environment to which they will bring a considerable sign of refinement.
