In the 80s I found two "eggs" made of a special material: it was neither wood nor plastic, but a kind of rubber-resin. It doesn't break.
One was in shades of brown and looked like wood, the other was multi-colored, almost garish, brazen but cheerful.
I mounted them as lamps: the brown one (wood type) I sold immediately, the other is this one, which I find: unusual, special, cheerful.
