17th century painting: Madonna with Child
Description:
Oil on canvas. Lombard school of the 17th century. The large scene features the Madonna seated in the center, offering her breast to the Baby Jesus, who instead reaches out to try to take a fruit from the basket that St. John the Baptist offers him, standing below them; around them, five figures of Saints, recognizable by their iconographic attributes. From the left, there are: St. Paul, holding the sword, Saint Anne, who lovingly watches over her daughter and grandson, Saint Peter with the keys to the Kingdom in his hand, Saint Joseph with his staff and a carpentry tool at his belt, and finally, last on the right, Saint Charles Borromeo, whose presence in the work supports the Lombard patronage. The painting also comes from the private collection of a Lombard family, of which it has been a part since the 19th century. The work is still in its first canvas and with its original frame; it has some small patches and signs of previous patches on the back. It is presented in a late 19th century frame.
