Neoclassical chest of drawers, finely inlaid, marble top, Lombardy, late 18th century, genre scene
Description:
Neoclassical chest of drawers, finely inlaid, marble top, Lombardy, late 18th century, genre scene Measurements: H 89 x W 125 x D 60 cm Price: Private negotiation Item accompanied by a certificate of authenticity This refined neoclassical chest of drawers was made in Lombardy, around the late 18th century. The piece of furniture has two large drawers and a smaller upper drawer. Of high executive level, a product of fine cabinetmaking, the chest of drawers is entirely inlaid with the use of wood essences such as rosewood and bois de rose. The interiors are in solid walnut wood. The inlaid surfaces have also been expertly pyrographied and are in excellent condition. This very refined technique makes it possible to create a greater definition of the ornaments and also to give three-dimensionality and chiaroscuro to the designs. On a dark background, the elegant inlays create neoclassical designs inspired by the taste of the time. On the front of the two large drawers, among large spirals and phytomorphic decorations that extend gracefully across the entire surface, a circular frame encloses a fine inlay work that represents a scene of classic taste with characters from ancient Rome. On the sides, on one side is depicted a woman, with a basket, a sickle and harvested wheat in her arms, on the other side another female figure supports a long plant tendril. These two figures are inscribed within two ovals surrounded by inlays with plant motifs. Corresponding to the upper drawer, both frontally and laterally, runs a band with inlays with a phytomorphic motif similar to that of the central decoration. The uprights are also inlaid with foliage and floral decorations. Of great value, the four inverted truncated pyramid feet are inlaid on two sides. The black marble top is contemporary. The handles and keyhole escutcheons, also original, are in finely chiseled gilded bronze. This chest of drawers has a very elegant line and a particularly refined workmanship. It is in excellent condition, ready to be placed in any room of your home: suitable for a study or a living room, it is also pleasant in a bedroom or in the entrance, combined with antique furniture and even more so in modern contexts.
