"Ecce Homo" SOLD  Translated
Description:
Oil on canvas ------ Period 1630/40 ------ Canvas dimensions 70 x 83, frame 81 x 94 ------ Excellent condition ------ Cleaned and relined ------ The figure of Christ, bound and bleeding, presented by Pilate to the people after the flagellation, has been one of the most powerful images in Christian art since the Renaissance, but it is certain that the greatest expression of this iconography materializes in the works of Guido Reni, the greatest and most influential of all Italian painters of the 17th century. ------ Painted in the third decade of the century, this very famous depiction exemplifies the unique combination of grace and religious conviction that the great Bolognese genius was able to shape in his depictions of the suffering Christ. --------- In these works, he avoids representing Christ with a disfigured face full of human suffering, omitting the recurring prototype that focuses on the externalization of physical pain. --------- The work deviates from the traditional message of the Ecce Homo, bringing to the subject an intensity and a graceful beauty that has since represented the Christian imagery of the Passion. ------- Our canvas, while undoubtedly presenting all the pictorial characteristics of the various creations that came out of his workshop, constitutes a very rare and interesting variant, differing slightly in the position of the face from the best-known ones. ---------- Considering the excellent quality of the painting, which is at a decidedly higher level than the many copies, we certainly consider it a product of his renowned workshop. ---------- The canvas in fact stands out for its pictorial perfection and for the extreme figurative elegance, with a splendid chromatism highlighted by the excellent condition. --------- It is in excellent condition, already perfectly cleaned and relined, complete with an antique gilded frame.  Translated
