Secrétaire Desk, Francesco Maggiolini Workshop, first quarter of the 19th century
Description:
Secrétaire desk composed of a drawer under the top, a drop-front door with a writing compartment, and two drawers in the lower part. Veneered in walnut burl and inlaid with various woods. The piece of furniture is divided into two parts, with a decorative choice that, in the lower part, relies on the marked grain of the walnut, while in the upper part, the sides and door are framed by a frame with successive drops, where a wicker basket containing a bouquet of flowers is placed in the center of the door, revealing a shelf. A stylized leaf pattern is inlaid in the band under the top, and two reserves with candelabras of small bundles of ivy leaves held by bows are on the uprights.
The writing compartment inside has two rows of three small drawers veneered in mahogany with a row of four cherry drawers in the center with bronze knobs, above a document holder compartment. Several springs allow access to numerous secrets. The double-throw door lock also closes the upper drawer, while the door has counterweights that allow it to stand still when open and close automatically when lifted.
