“ MADONNA WITH CHILD” - EXTRAORDINARY LATE RENAISSANCE POLYCHROME WOODEN SCULPTURE OF THE GERMAN SCH
Description:

Extraordinary late Renaissance polychrome wooden sculpture depicting the "Madonna with Child". The latter is depicted in two different attitudes: with his right hand holding the "apple" he represents the "God pantocrator" who protects the world (ethical-religious attitude). With his left hand he simply greets the observer, an attitude that wants to underline the familiar and everyday tone of the representation. The Madonna has the face of a young country girl who suddenly finds herself projected as the protagonist of an extraordinary story. However, she does not seem upset enough to casually wear the large crown that underlines her role as "Regina Coeli". According to ancient devotion, the faithful used to place roses or wildflowers inside Mary's right hand which is in fact semi-open almost to grab and hold something. The sculpture as a whole is of excellent workmanship with a plastic effect and motor skills that underline its vital force. The beautiful image thus clearly emerges in the limelight as a real "sculptural work of art" and not just a pure and simple devotional image.

In linden wood which helps the conservation of the colors and their current vivacity. The back of the work is hollowed out and corrugated due to the gouge used for the excavation.

Work of exceptional artistic level in the wake of the best Germanic Renaissance tradition due to the great lesson of DURER who brings his nation out of the late-Gothic legacy by introducing it into the European channel of the Renaissance, especially Italian.

High school.

Germany (Bavaria) - second half of the 16th century (16th century)

Measurements: height cm. 59 cm wide. 27 cm depth. 16

N.B. in the excavated part behind the sculpture a signature engraved in relatively recent times by a collector of the work itself is visible.
