Centerpiece (Surtout de table) in finely chiseled gilded bronze. France, early 19th century
Description:
Elegant centerpiece (surtout de table) in finely chiseled gilded bronze. France, early 19th century Diameter 75 cm; H 9 cm. H 11 cm the highest point (harps) Price between 8,500-9,500 Euro Object accompanied by a certificate of authenticity Period: between Empire and Charles X This splendid French centerpiece features a circular base covered with a mirror, surrounded by a rich frame made of finely chiseled bronze, both externally and internally, and gilded. The openwork frame is decorated with foliate scroll motifs, interspersed with vases of flowers and fruit and, at the four supports, with harps. It rests on a band, also in gilded bronze, chiseled with a laurel leaf and berry decoration. The particularity of this surtout de table is its remarkable size, which is quite rare. The surtout de table, which became fashionable in France in the second half of the eighteenth century, was designed to be placed in the center of a dining table. Surmounted by candlesticks, it reflects the light produced by the flame, creating a pleasant luminosity. Likewise, it can diffuse the light from any chandelier suspended above it. It could also be used to display floral arrangements or, as a tray, to serve fruit and desserts. The object will be very effective both on an antique table and on a modern wooden or crystal table, on which it will bring refinement, elegance and a lot of light.
