Oil on canvas
Provenance: Veneto
Era: Second half of the 17th century
Canvas dimensions: 42 x 48 cm; frame dimensions: 58 x 65 cm
Coeval lacquered and gilded frame
Artwork of the highest level, untouched
This painting, a true jewel of the 17th century with great character, exhibits all the stylistic and pictorial characteristics of the great Venetian master Pietro Liberi, which can be found above all in the unmistakable classicizing profile of the Virgin but also in the expressive force of Joseph and the joyous exuberance of the Infant's face.
The perfect balance of the scene and the vivid use of color with vigorous brushstrokes are elements that lead to place the painting in the mature phase of his long production, dating it to the 1660s/1670s.
It is very rare to admire works by this great master outside of public exhibitions, and indeed the scene is particularly pleasing and, as the dimensions suggest, almost certainly commissioned for domestic use.
The work is in excellent condition, intact and beautifully preserved without any type of intervention on the painting.
Relined in the 19th century, the painting is complemented by an important contemporary frame.
