Description:
Set of three Pierre Guariche sconces from the 1950s. Made of perspex with brass details. In excellent condition, bayonet bulb fitting. Measurements: cm. 31.3 x 11.5. "Pierre Guariche" The French modern designer Pierre Guariche (Paris, 1926 – Bandol, 1995) was born into a family of goldsmiths in Paris. Here he studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Paris under the guidance of René Gabriel, graduating in 1949. At the same time, he also worked in the studio of Marcel Gascoin, one of his former professors. He joined the Union des Artistes Moderns (UAM), a collective dedicated to promoting progressive design and its aesthetic principles, founded by Robert Mallet-Stevens in 1929. Thanks to the UAM, Guariche was able to experiment with materials and shapes, and he exhibited his works at the Salon des Arts Ménagers and the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs. His work was soon noticed and put into production by Galerie MAI, Pierre Disderot's lighting manufacturer. In the same year, the designer also began working for Steiner. This collaboration led to the creation of the famous Tulipe chairs in 1953, as well as the Vampire and Amsterdam/Tonneau chairs. In 1954, Pierre Guariche founded Ateliers de Recherche Plastique (ARP) together with two designer friends, Michel Mortier and Joseph-André Motte. The three had met during their internship at Gascoin's studio. Together, they would create a wide selection of modern and accessible furniture for Huchers Minvielle and other manufacturers. In 1957, Guariche became artistic director of the Belgian company Meurop. Here, his work embraced biomorphic forms, as can be seen in his Mars, Jupiter, and Luna armchairs. In the late 1950s, Pierre Guariche focused increasingly on private and public commissions, such as for the winter resorts of La Plagne and Courchevel in France. Guariche was awarded the René Gabriel Prize in 1965. He died in 1995.
