17th century, Venetian School
Cabinet – Box
Lacquered and gilded wood, height 46 cm; 50 x 31 cm
Elegant cabinet of commanding and noble presence. The leonine feet highlight the desire, already marked in the lacquering of the wood, to further embellish the case. The cabinet is crowned by a lid concealing a secret compartment, which can be closed by a lock. The modular decoration of the lid, organized through intense chromatic partitioning, echoes the main curved body, embellished with a shaped application with a pair of specular racemes that adorn its center. Gilded frames, listels and highlights evoking Venetian marbles and granites make the box multi-colored, according to a consolidated Venetian decorative practice. The Venetian school that seals the present piece evokes, through subtle arabesques, the polychrome marbles of Venetian goldsmiths, recalling the marble inlays adorning the Basilica of San Marco, as well as the architectures of Codussi and Pietro Solari.
