In 1772, Pope Clement XIII commissioned the master engraver Giovanni Ottaviani, based on drawings by the painter Savorelli, with the collaboration of the architect Camporesi, to reproduce all the frescoes executed by Raphael in 1518 in the private apartments of the Vatican.
This hand-finished and watercolored engraving bears the inscription "cum privilegio ss D.N Clementis XIII" in the lower right.
The idea of capturing Raphael's immense work using the engraving technique dates back to the 18th century. The famous engraver Ottaviani, collaborating with the painter Savorelli and Camporesi, decided to reproduce all the frescoes depicted in the Vatican loggias by RAPHAEL in engraved and colored imperial sheets with watercolor. The work began in 1772 and ended in 1778.
