Saint Joseph with Child
Emilian Master from the Circle of Guido Reni
Oil on canvas
Mid-17th century period
Canvas dimensions 65 x 77 cm, frame 76 x 88 cm
The work is in good condition.
The painting depicts Saint Joseph, elderly and with white hair but with a virile gaze, holding the Baby Jesus.
The robust hand delicately supports the naked little body, and his face turns towards the Child in a kindly way but with a serious and thoughtful expression. His gaze does not reflect the joy of a Father who proudly admires his Son, but the resignation in accepting an extraordinary event that involves him in an absolutely unusual way, not as a protagonist.
The scene is touching and sees the Child reaching out his arm to touch the Old Man's beard with his hand, seeking physical contact and creating a connection between the two figures.
The Author, certainly gifted, manages to describe the state of mind of a humble Person who, faced with an inexplicable Event, is seized by a strong doubt and tries to understand what his role will be in the Divine plan.
The work recalls, in its setting, some creations by Guido Reni, the most important of which is exhibited in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, which inspired many Masters of his circle in various reinterpretations.
