Madonna with Child Angels and Saints
Description:
Oil on canvas. Northern Italian school of the 17th-18th century. The work of devotional character depicts the Madonna, seated on the clouds and assisted by two angels supporting her robes; she is venerated by two saints, kneeling at her feet: on the right, the young woman in princely clothes, at whose feet rests a regal crown, refers to Elizabeth of Hungary; on the left, the saint holding the Baby Jesus is identifiable as Saint Gaetano da Thiene. Of particular note is the interplay of gazes between the various characters, which intertwine with the positions and gestures, creating an almost circular movement. The painting has been restored and relined. It is presented in an antique frame re-gilded in the early 20th century, with several current lacks (to be restored).
