Oil on canvas. 18th - 19th century. The sacred theme takes on a familiar connotation in this scene, full of tenderness and truly earthly intimacy: in an almost exotic context, which evokes an oasis in the desert with palm trees and a pool of water in a bare and barren hilly landscape, Joseph and Mary sit down to rest during their flight to Egypt, to escape Herod's persecution; the mother tenderly holds the baby Jesus on her lap, looks at him tenderly and swaddles him, while Joseph watches them contentedly and relaxed. The whole scene is characterized by the dominance of brown-ochre colors, from which only Mary's dress deviates, in its traditional blue and red colors; in the background, a clear sky in the colors of a newly dawned sunrise, pinkish hues. The canvas has been applied to a new mid-20th century frame and placed in a frame from the same period, which has gaps.
