The large painting depicts a magnificent view of the San Marco Basin in Venice, considered the most representative image of the fantastic Lagoon City. In the foreground, the Doge's Palace, the columns and bell tower of the Square, and in the background, the Punta della Dogana with the Church of the Salute reflected on the waters of the mouth of the Grand Canal.
A swarm of typical Venetian boats, rendered with an extraordinary sense of movement, animates the scene of the Lagoon.
It is a splendid work signed by the Piedmontese Giuseppe Riva, who distinguished himself in the late 1800s for his lively city views, especially of the cities of Milan and Venice, and for the depiction of the most significant monuments of the Lombard capitals.
The "Venice" that we propose here is undoubtedly one of his most successful creations, both for the confident and precise brushstroke and for the particularly lively and luminous chromaticism with the combination of warm and cold colors of great effect.
Among his works depicting the Serenissima, this is a true exception, because it is the only large-format one in his catalog.
