Large 17th-century canvas depicting the solemn moment of the "Coronation of the Virgin," one of the most fascinating and pleasing Sacred Images.
The painting is divided into two sections: the "earthly" part of the scene is described below with a beautiful landscape adorned with flowers. A blanket of clouds divides the two settings and seems to support the main scene of the painting where the figures of the protagonists stand out in a celestial context, illuminated by a supernatural light.
The Virgin, in the most classic of settings, is depicted in the center of the scene with God the Father and the Son on either side, reaching out their arms and placing the crown on her head. The Holy Trinity is completed by the Dove of the Holy Spirit. Angels and Cherubs hidden among the clouds enliven the composition.
The work highlights the unmistakable stylistic and chromatic features of the production of Guglielmo Caccia, known as "il Moncalvo", the most important exponent of the Piedmontese Counter-Reformation. He was a great painter of altarpieces and religious canvases and distinguished himself for his frescoes made in churches between Piedmont and Lombardy between the 16th and 17th centuries.
Our canvas, probably made in his workshop, is a valid example and both the setting and the chromatism denote his propensity for the fresco technique.
