Florentine school, 17th century, Saint John the Baptist  Translated
Description:
Florentine school, 17th century Saint John the Baptist Oil on canvas, diam. cm 20 – with frame diam. 30 In this small canvas of round format, Saint John the Baptist is depicted in half-length with his typical infant iconography, dressed in poor clothes made of deer skin and a scarlet cloak. The Young Man looks at us pointing to the staff on which the scroll with the traditional inscription is knotted: "Ecce Agnus Dei", the sentence pronounced when he saw Jesus for the first time. The iconography of the Young John the Baptist in the desert, often accompanied by a Lamb, was born in the post-Tridentine era deriving from the invention of the artists of the Italian Renaissance of the episode of Saint John and the Baby Jesus playing together. The gesture of the arm outstretched with the finger pointing upwards serves to indicate the one to be followed, that is, Christ.
