Saint Anthony Abbot
Gilded wood, cm height 61 – base cm 25x17.5
This wooden sculpture depicts Saint Anthony Abbot. Anthony was born in Come, Egypt, in 151. At the age of twenty, he sold all his possessions to lead a hermitic life as an ascetic, living in solitude in the abandoned fort of Pispir, enduring and withstanding all kinds of temptation. His growing fame led him to abandon his hermitic life to attend to the numerous faithful. Following medieval iconography, the saint is depicted with the classic habit and hairstyle of monks while holding a book in his hands and is accompanied by an animal figure, perhaps a pig, his traditional attribute. The slender figure is skillfully carved: the deep chiaroscuro that emerges from the folds of the habit returns a light volume, the slightly springy curls of the hair, and the sincere expression assumed by the saint demonstrate the sculptor's plastic ability. The garments are made by applying layers of gold leaf which are then lacquered at a later time; the artist, thanks to skillful light touches, tries to recreate the idea of a precious damask fabric.
The sculpture is relevant to the 18th century, clearly dependent on that set of formalistic conceptions that were being developed in the period.
