Joyful gallop of Camargue mares with their foals returning from pasture.
The author of the painting is certainly a careful observer and lover of this ancient breed typical of the Camargue region. In fact, he portrays the adult mares with their gray-white coats and their characteristic morphologies with somewhat large heads, wide foreheads, short but broad ears, and large, expressive eyes.
In painting the three foals, he wanted to represent the change in their color from the blackish-brown of the youngest, to protect themselves from the sun's rays and better blend in with the terrain, then gradually, as they grow older, lighten until, when they reach adulthood, around the age of four, they will become gray-white.
