"Virgin and Child"
Oil on copper
Period: Second half of the 17th century
Copper: 32 x 42 cm; Frame: 50 x 60 cm
Excellent condition
Painting on copper depicting a very young Virgin gently holding Her Child, executed with extraordinary finesse.
The exquisite craftsmanship and excellent state of preservation allow for an extremely enjoyable viewing of the work.
The pictorial perfection is free from regional stylistic influences or particular physiognomic characteristics, but expresses with a first-rate pictorial technique an image of infinite sweetness.
The exceptional plastic effect is highlighted by the outstretched arm and legs of the Child, which give the illusion of coming out of the painting and reaching towards the viewer.
It is clearly a copper of the highest quality that, certainly intended for domestic devotion, far from messages of sad omens, provokes only positive sensations.
The author of the work has not yet been identified and should be sought among the most talented masters of the 17th century Italian.
