Portrait of a young woman
Plaster, cm 50 x 40 x h 40
Dated 10 - 1 - MCMI
The emergence of a "Scapigliatura style" in sculpture became established from the 1880s with Giuseppe Grandi, author of the Monument to the Five Days of Milan, Ernesto Bazzaro, Paolo Troubetzkoy, Leonardo Bistolfi, culminating in the total formal dissolution of Medardo Rosso.
In the analyzed sculpture, the recovery of an intense colorism is clearly visible, creating forms by approximation, with a suggestive play of light and shadow. The process of tempering the form is implemented here through material fade-outs that abolish contours and drawing, comparable to the evanescent painting of Cremona and the sensual and intimate luminism of Daniele Ranzoni, the two major exponents of Scapigliatura painting.
The research present in this sculpture forgets the neoclassical smoothness and the clarity of romantic art, seeking effects of pictorial luminism and elaborating a personal sculptural modeling with vibrant and lively modes. The anti-academic renewal position of the Scapigliatura is identifiable here in the form of a very lively and vibrant modeled, comparable with the works of Paolo Troubetzkoy and Medardo Rosso.
The investigation of the real data can be seen in the care given to the realization of the portrait of the young woman, not an idealized image, but a representation adhering to the truth, where the small defects of the face are not masked, but reported with pride and consistency.
