PORTRAIT OF AN ANCIENT KNIGHT - oil on canvas - (NEW ENTRY)
Description:
An anonymous painter from the early 20th century decided to reinterpret, with good technique, a painting titled "Portrait of a Knight" executed, in turn, by an "anonymous Lombard painter" from the 17th century and exhibited today at the Civic Museums of Como. He surely presents the "Knight" in his parade attire. The portrait, thus characterized, shows in detail the characteristics of the clothing of a knight of the time, most likely of noble origin, thanks to the beautiful gorget, a collar usually made of pleated linen, which he wears around his neck, an elegant armor with very fine engravings and of excellent workmanship. Let us not forget that the Milanese school for engravings on armor was well known at the time in European courts and even earlier. In fact, in the decoration, one can notice firearms crossed with each other, helmets, edged weapons inserted in a "parade" shield (typical of noble families), friezes, and emblems. While his left hand holds the elegant "handle" of the sword, his right hand holds a typical instrument of riflemen: "the ground support fork" for firearms of considerable size. His attire is completed by richly embroidered trousers with very elaborate applications. Behind the portrait, the plumed helmet can be glimpsed. The painting, oil on canvas, is presented without a frame.
