Idiot Study, 1909  Translated
Description:
ANSELMO BUCCI (Fossombrone, 1887 - Monza, 1955) Idiot Study, 1909 Oil on canvas, 50x36 cm Autograph inscription on the back: “Bucci/1909/Studio/di idiota/36x50” [“Bucci/1909/Idiot Study/36x50”] Provenance: Mario Fossati collection (Bucci Heirs) Bibliography: Anselmo Bucci - La collezione Mario Fossati (Milan, 2009) n 145; Anselmo Bucci 1887 - 1955. Painter and engraver between Paris, Milan and Monza, Exhibition Catalog edited by P. Biscottini and E. Crispolti, Silvana ed. 2005, plate 3; Anselmo Bucci - La collezione Mario Fossati (Milan, 2009) n 12; Tra le righe. Twenty-four artists of the Italian Novecento through images and words, edited by G. Cribiori, 9cento Milano Edizioni, 2023, plate 67, p 129 Exhibitions: Monza, 2005 Contrary to his habits, Bucci allows himself the modesty and tact not to indicate the name of the character to whom he dedicates such an eloquent title. From a pictorial point of view, it can be noted, compared to previous portraits, the abandonment of an extremely rich painting full of chromatic contrasts and characterized by vehement brushstrokes, in favor of a more balanced chromatic structure, more wisely balanced; despite this, as we will emphasize several times in this volume, the palette is always the same, but the percentages change; just note the presence of small touches of green used here and there on the face. The rendering is very modern, the choice and emphasis of the crooked glasses on the nose is interesting, which highlights the protagonist's neglect, which is almost comical, especially when correlated with the title. Work probably painted in Italy, given the title indicated by Bucci himself, who would otherwise have written in French, as he loved to do.
