"The Descent of the Holy Spirit" SOLD
Description:
"Pentecost"
Circle of Caspar de Crayer (Antwerp 1584 - Ghent 1669)
Oil on canvas
Canvas dimensions 77 x 64 frame 95 x 82
This lively seventeenth-century painting depicts in a very scenic way the evangelical episode of Pentecost, or the Descent of the Holy Spirit, which took place 50 days after the resurrection of Christ.
The Virgin with her hands clasped is surrounded by the Apostles who assume attitudes and expressions of amazement in seeing the flames descend upon them.
The composition, which has all the characteristics of 17th-century Flemish painting, is particularly pleasing both for the remarkable description of the characters and for the splendid colors.
It is very likely that the work is a study of the scenic composition of a large altarpiece executed with care to be presented to the client.
The attribution to the circle of Crayer was declared by Christie's experts in 1990.
In fact, the canvas comes from the Christie's auction in New York on October 10, 1990, lot 594 (Entourage Caspar de Crayer).
The work is in excellent condition with an old relining complete with a gilded Mecca frame.
