Gaming table  Translated
Description:
Important walnut gaming table with a wavy top that opens like a book. This model of gaming table is typical of works attributed to workshops in the Emilia region around the mid-18th century. The table is not a replica but is authentic to the period. There is a chessboard on the top and green upholstery inside. Thanks to legs that tilt backwards, it can be opened to extend the surface. It has a drawer in the front within a curved band and curved legs with an elegant claw foot, known in English as a "ball and claw foot". Most historical sources report that the design of the "ball and claw" derives from the Chinese tradition: a dragon holding a crystal ball or a pearl in its claw. In Chinese mythology, the dragon, which personifies the emperor, is the guardian of the sphere, a symbol of purity and wisdom, against the forces of the devil who try to steal it. Another interpretation is that the sphere symbolizes a polished stone held firm by a crane standing in its nest. This model used by the Chinese and Japanese came to the attention of Europeans through trade. Porcelain, chinoiserie and bronzes brought the sphere and claw to the attention of the West. The element first appeared on English silverware and was soon used in other arts, on glass and furniture. English cabinetmakers then took credit by transforming the dragon's claw into bird claws or lion paws. The sphere and claw were very popular in England from 1710 to 1750.
