This splendid oil painting on canvas excellently depicts the most interesting and sought-after aspects of Flemish painting.
In fact, in addition to the famous Still Lifes, the Belgian and Dutch masters distinguished themselves throughout Europe with an incredible production of scenes set in tavern interiors or outdoors in villages or countryside.
The characters in these paintings always took on a physical appearance with caricatured features, with deliberately exaggerated expressions and attitudes, characteristic of Flemish folklore.
The painting published here perfectly expresses the pictorial taste of one of the most famous authors of this type of work, namely the "Bambocciante" master from Antwerp David Teniers the Younger, son of Teniers the Elder and his pupil as well as brother of three other talented painters.
In this case, the Author, to be sought among his most gifted pupils, abandons the more "unpleasant" depictions of taverns with drinkers, smokers and card players, alchemists and tooth pullers, for one of the most successful scenes in his repertoire.
It is the cheerful and lively "Village Festival" described in detail, with a series of characters intent on dancing carefree, others conversing animatedly or whispering near the friend's ear.
From a skylight on the roof, a curious person looks out to watch the scene.
Two lovers kiss, a drunk has fallen asleep on a barrel while in a corner a character, with his back turned, urinates on the wall, in the most typical Flemish pictorial tradition so appreciated by collectors.
It is an evidently very pleasant painting, of excellent workmanship with bright colors and in excellent condition, inside a carved and gilded frame that completes it perfectly.
Finally, note the remarkable size for a compositional type that usually includes small paintings, but which, despite this, maintains a very fine figurative standard
