"Venice, Sunset on the Lagoon"
Signed and dated 1867
Canvas size 82 x 50 cm, frame 94 x 62 cm
Excellent condition.
This spectacular sunset, set in the most fascinating of views, is a splendid work by the French painter Gallard-Lepinay.
The author, famous for his numerous depictions of Venice and the Lagoon, breaks away from the simple description of natural beauty with a dreamlike interpretation halfway between the real and the fantastic.
The light that radiates from this painting is truly something incredible.
It is undoubtedly one of his most successful and interesting works.
We find a very similar painting in a Sotheby's auction in New York on June 3, 2010, lot 229 (see photo).
Lepinay became famous for his seascapes and was named "official painter of the French Navy," a recognition that earned his works a place in several French museums.
He rivaled his "alter ego" Felix Ziem in creating splendid paintings with Venice and its extraordinary views as their subject.
The painting technique of these two French artists was so similar that unsigned paintings were often confused.
