Animism, in anthropology, is the set of religions or cults in which divine or supernatural quality is attributed to objects, places, or material beings.[1] These religions do not consider deities as purely transcendent beings, but rather attribute spiritual properties to certain physical realities.[1] This type of belief is so called because it is based on a certain degree of identification between the divine spiritual principle (soul) and the material aspect of beings and entities (such as demons or other presences).[2] The philosophical position corresponding to animism is usually called panpsychism.[3]
