Large gilded Neoclassical table, late 18th century  Translated
Description:
Important Neoclassical center table, made of carved wood and gilded with pure gold leaf, embellished with an antique peperino top, veneered with "macchia vecchia" marble and bordered in "verde Alpi". The legs are fluted and end with acanthus leaves, interspersed with a typical Neoclassical period decoration and surmounted by a Corinthian capital. The exquisitely carved band is composed of ornaments, curvilinear tendrils of flowers and leaves, and palmettes that surround it. A rose for each corner and two high reliefs create the focal points of the large table, in addition to the magnificent design created by the specularity of the marble. One decoration depicts Leda and the swan, lying on a drape. In the other ornament, Leda is again portrayed in a bucolic setting, with a zither in her hand and the swan beside her. The myth of the Story of Leda and the Swan is part of Greek mythological legends, and its story, which has many, primarily erotic, meanings, has always fascinated artists, especially during the Renaissance and Neoclassical periods. Later, around the early 20th century, extensions of approximately 45cm each were added to the table, which, in addition, allow the marble top to weigh less on the wooden part of the table. Central Italy, Rome and the Papal States, last quarter of the 18th century. Measurements: L.200cm P. 100cm H.80cm Some minor marble restoration. Excellent condition, considering the age and use.   Translated
