Nicolaes Berchem, a Flemish painter of the 17th century, belongs to that group of Dutch painters who, starting from the 16th century, came to stay in Italy, fascinated by the artistic richness and wonderful places. --
In Italy, he could study the masterpieces of the great masters, increase his culture, and perfect his painting technique.
He stayed in Lazio from 1642 to 1653, and in the countryside around Rome, he painted his landscapes. --
His workshop specialized in depicting landscapes with shepherds and grazing animals. --
