Description:
GIANNI MAIMERI
(Varano, 18874 - Milan, 1951)
Milan, Autumn Lambretto, 1928
Oil on canvas, cm 120x150
The painting was presented by the artist to the committee of the Venice Biennale in 1930, which, after initially admitting it, rejected it due to Maimeri's excessive financial request.
Subsequent exhibitions documented by the labels on the back of the work demonstrate how significant Maimeri considered this work to be.
In fact, one cannot deny the excellent pictorial achievement in rendering the atmosphere and the tranquility transmitted by the then Milanese countryside, in this case identifiable by the title, located near the so-called "Barona", where Maimeri founded with his brother the successful company of colors and materials for fine arts, still active today.
On the back of the frame are several labels: XVIII International Art Exhibition, City of Venice, 1930; Galleria Pesaro in Milan (1931); torn label presumably from the V Exhibition of the Interprovincial Syndicate of Fine Arts of Lombardy, Milan, spring 1934; Second National Quadrennial Art Exhibition, Rome, 1935
